In Germany, there are voluntary fire departments. That means the squad is composed of volunteers who have the responsibility to extinguish fires or to perform other emergency related services (just like fulltime fire fighters).
Because of the voluntary nature of the fire department, it is possible to join the team. There is also a youth group for kids that prepares them slowly for possible operations.
