Kyll riverbank
54636 Dahlem
Short description
Legend has it that the pagan Frankish King Dagobert had three sisters (or daughters), who had all converted to Christianity and lived in an abbey. The pagan King wanted them back in his castle and sent soldiers to force the women back home. The three fled with a donkey as their pack mule, and when they came to the bridge-less river Kyll they prayed to the Virgin Mary for advice. Mary advised the girls to all sit on the donkey. They obeyed and the donkey then jumped over the river to safety, leaving the Kings troops to fall in and drown. As thanks for their safety, the maidens built a shrine for the Virgin Mary, which today still stands as a place of pilgrimage.
